Student Internship and Volunteer Opportunities - A Note from The Green Plus Program

Dear Student,

The Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD) seeks to connect academic institutions with the private sector to educate, motivate, and reward small and medium-sized businesses in their efforts toward greater triple bottom line sustainability.  The Institute has partnered with Duke and UNC through its Green Plus program (www.gogreenplus.org) to provide hands-on experience in sustainability evaluation and coaching, as well as in researching topics of sustainability that relate to smaller enterprises.  There are three potential opportunities for involvement with the Institute:

1. Unpaid/for-credit/paid internships
2. Competitive, paid Sustainability Fellowships
3. Volunteer opportunities

  1.  Internships: Internships are interdisciplinary in nature and open to Duke undergraduate and graduate students.  We are open to working with students from any discipline.  As an intern, you will gain skills and experience in evaluating and coaching small businesses in triple bottom line sustainability and have an opportunity to play an integral role in helping to scale the university partnership program across the United States.  Internships are typically unpaid, though depending on your University program you may be able to receive course credit or compensation for your participation.

Application process: If you’re interested in applying for internships in the second half of the 2009-2010 school year, please email info@gogreenplus.org with a resume and cover letter by December 18th, 2009.

  2.  Sustainability Fellowships: ISD will offer a limited number of interdisciplinary Sustainability Fellowships starting in Summer 2010.  Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, these fellowships are competitive, full-time, paid positions in Chapel Hill, NC.  The Fellowship is comprised of two components: 1) evaluating and coaching small and medium-sized enterprises in sustainability and 2) working on an in-depth summer project in an area of sustainability.  The summer project provides an opportunity to connect your academic experience to real world application with the possibility of presenting your findings to the Green Plus team and/or board.  As a Fellow, you will shape a growing organization and work with a team of Fellows from multiple disciplines and schools.  Particularly qualified applicants may have the opportunity to further their leadership skills and gain responsibility overseeing and managing a team or component of the Green Plus program for the summer season.

Application process: The application period for Summer Fellowships opens January 12th, 2010.  Applicants will be notified in March 2010.  All interested applicants should email your resume and cover letter to info@gogreenplus.org by February 12th, 2010.

  3.  Volunteering: To sign up for the volunteer list-serv, please sign up at the following link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/G5TR7CH

Volunteer Opportunities

Quick Wins During the Holiday Season - From Net Impact.org

This holiday season, focus on the four main areas below to make a positive impact at work.

  • Give sustainable gifts. Treehugger's 2009 Gift Guide is a great place to start. Consider spending time with friends and family as well as exploring the options below:
    * Give a microloan from Kiva.org or MicroPlace
    * Donate three bed nets from Malaria No More for $30
    * Help an entrepreneur or family with Heifer International - a $20 donation can buy someone a flock of geese
    * Support social and economic justice and buy Fair Trade Goods from Global ExchangeWorld of Good, and Fair Trade Federation Members.
    * Donate to your favorite nonprofit. We can think of one in particular that would love your support.

  • Reduce holiday waste. Purchase biodegradable flatware and utensils and LED Christmas bulbs that use 80-90% less energy than incandescents for office events. Check out this great column from Grist.org for more ideas.

  • Give back to your community. From helping out at a local homeless shelter to hosting a gift exchange for families in need, volunteering can be a team building exercise that allows you and your colleagues to give back during the holiday season. For a short-term project consider the resources of organizations such as Points of Light and VolunteerMatch. If you're interested in something more long-term, consider working with your local Net Impact Chapter and joining or helping start a Service Corps or Board Fellows program in your local area.

  • Plan for 2010. This December, start thinking about how you want to make an impact at work in 2010.
    * Read up on other Net Impact success stories
    * Review the guide to Making Your Impact at Work (.pdf)
    * Fill out an Impact at Work Project Template (.doc)
    * Sign up for an upcoming Impact at Work Series Issues in Depth Call
