What is the Net Impact Club at Fuqua?

Our mission is to instill the desire in all students to make a meaningful impact in the world, and equip them with the tools necessary to achieve it, regardless of which sector, company, or position they pursue. We believe that as business school students our greatest benefit to future employers is not only increasing their bottom line, but doing so while simultaneously creating a better world.

What does The Duke MBA Net Impact Club do?

The Net Impact Club (NIC) aims to provide students with opportunities to learn about how they can integrate the fundamental business skills that they learn at Duke with social impact in any industry or functional area. NIC is a career, social, and service organization.

How active is the club in the school?

The NIC chapter at Fuqua is very large in terms of number of students involved, as well as general presence on campus. We have grown very rapidly in the past few years. More students have shown interest in the club and its activities, and faculty and staff have helped us to achieve our expanding goals.

Does Net Impact only focus on the nonprofit sector? What about Corporate Social Responsibility and for-profit companies with a social mission?

Reflecting the diverse interests of Fuqua students, The Duke MBA NIC focuses not only on the nonprofit sector, but also on CSR, social entrepreneurship, and for-profit career paths. We support students in making an impact, however they seek to do so.

How is The Duke MBA Net Impact Club involved in the local community?

NIC offers various opportunities for skills-based volunteering in Durham and the surrounding communities. Fuqua on Board is a popular program that places students on the Board of Directors of local nonprofit organizations. At the beginning of each year, NIC coordinates Day in Durham, during which students meet community leaders working in specific focus areas, such as health care, sustainability, education, and economic development.

How can I be involved when I start as a First Year student?

First Year students make up our First Year Cabinet, thus supporting and partnering with the Second Year Cabinet members. Furthermore, any First Year is welcome to participate in the club's many activities throughout the year and to volunteer for events such as the Footprints Conference. We also welcome suggestions from First Years as to how we can better serve the students.

Is The Duke MBA Net Impact Club connected with any academic department?

Yes, The Duke MBA Net Impact Club is closely supported by the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE). We work with CASE staff members on various programs, including career workshops and guest speakers. CASE and Fuqua in general are very supportive of The Duke MBA Net Impact Club. Please see the CASE website, www.caseatduke.org

How do Fuqua students connect with students at other Net Impact Clubs at other schools?

We collaborate throughout the year with nearby chapters of Net Impact Club, including UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State. We also have a large contingent of students attend the national Net Impact Conference each year, where we interact with students from across the country.

How does NIC support students through off-campus and nontraditional job searches?

The Career Chairs and other students coordinate with CASE and the Career Management Center to create guidance and support specifically targeted for students interested in or just exploring jobs in the social sector and other "nontraditional" MBA paths. Students can join “Job Search Teams,” which meet weekly to provide a process and network of support, including internship search strategies and mock interviews.

What types of students are involved in NIC?

The Duke MBA NIC attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds and interest areas. We have students coming from the nonprofit and public sector, as well as the corporate sector. Some students have a clear vision of their career goals in the social sector (e.g. international development, environmental sustainability), while others may be exploring how they may wish to incorporate social impact into their professional and personal lives.

Can I talk with a current student involved in NIC?

Can I meet with NIC members when I visit campus?
